A Mighty Fortress Is Our God

Hymns June 12, 2022 Psalm 46:1-11 Notes

“A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” is one of the best-known hymns by Martin Luther, who wrote the words and composed the melody sometime between 1527 and 1529. It has been translated into English at least seventy times and into many other languages. It has been called the “Battle Hymn of the Reformation” for the effect it had in increasing the support for the Reformers’ cause.

When you look at your life, do you sometimes want a fortress? Do you need a refuge from busyness? Do you lack the confidence that comes with spending time with the Lord? Do you need strength to meet the demands of life today? Martin Luther sang the words of Psalm 46 often, and it led him to write “Mighty Fortress”. Perhaps you need the strength of God’s presence. In Psalm 46, the Psalmist wrote a song for the people of Israel telling them that God is with us and gives us strength. We can know that God’s might is with us always!
